Launched in 2006, Microsoft was unable to gain traction with Zune. The Apple iPod had already dominated since 2001 in a winner-take-most market. Zune had a smaller catalog, poor marketing, and lack of developer support. Only a year after being introduced, music became just an app when the iPhone launched.
