In 2003, before everyone was playing games on their smartphones, Nokia decided to combine phones and gaming. It failed because it tried to be a great phone and great handheld game console, but it wasn’t the best at either. Users had to hold it sideways to make phone calls, earning it the nickname “taco phone.” Plus the controls were considered awkward for gaming, it faced strong competition from Nintendo and Sony PlayStation, and you had to remove the battery to swap game cartridges so meant the phone powered off everytime you changed games.
